The Volkswagen (VW) Touareg is not exactly the greenest of cars - but it has at least gone a little greener, thanks to a touch of blue.
Yes VW has launched a BlueMotion version of the Touareg which offers improved fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of 219g/km - placing it narrowly below the 225g/km tax threshold.
It is fitted with a more efficient version of the regular car’s 3.0litre V6 TDI common rail diesel engine which develops 550Nm of torque and drives through a six-speed automatic tiptronic gearbox. A number of modifications have been made to improve its efficiency including low rolling resistance tyres, a ride height that has been lowered by 25mm to reduce drag and an optimised engine with a more efficient alternator.
The BlueMotion version of the Touareg also includes a regenerative braking system which is used to charge the battery while the vehicle is in motion. It achieves around 34mpg in the combined cycle and it is now one of the only non-hybrid vehicles in its class to drop below the 225g/km barrier.
Despite these improvements, there has been little sacrifice in terms of performance - the Touareg BlueMotion is capable of racing from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and has a top speed of 126mph.
The first cars are due to arrive in September but are available for pre-order now - prices start at £34,150 on the road RRP for the entry level model and rise to £37,545 for the SE.
