Considered by many to be the ultimate eco-car, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation finally unveiled the production version of the i-MiEV as part of World Environment Day in Tokyo.
The green car is considered a solution to a number of challenges faced by cars today from the depletion of petrol-based supplies to environmental pollution and global warming. Even with the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from power generating stations taken into consideration, the i-MiEV generates around one third of the CO2 of the petrol “I” Minicar according to Mitsubishi.
It is hoped that the vehicle will be distributed on a maintenance lease basis with some 1,400 i-MiEV units to be supplied principally to corporations and local authorities during the fiscal year 2009. The company will then start sales of the i-MiEV to individuals starting in April 2010 with orders to be taken on the Mitsubishi website starting in late July.
The vehicle has some impressive credentials. It includes a 1,100kg rear-wheel drive that makes maximum use of the long wheelbase and has a 99mile cruising range making it adequate for everyday use. Power consumption is 125Wh/km.
Also included in the Mitsubishi i-MiEV is the MiEV operating system, which is an advanced integrated vehicle management system for new-generation electric vehicles. It monitors battery status and the energy recovered from the regenerative brakes and also regulates output to ensure smooth and powerful acceleration.
The i-MiEV uses a three-way charging system that allows the drive battery to be charged at home or when on the move. For normal charging, i-MiEVs can be connected to either a standard 100V or 200V domestic outlet.
