The race to be named green car of the year 2009 is over and the winner is… the Volvo S40.
The vehicle beat out 23 other contenders to the top accolade at the What Car? Green Awards, which are held in association with Michelin and Warranty Direct.
According to the magazine’s editor Steve Fowler, the S40 is a “great example of a car maker cleverly refining existing technologies to make a seriously green car”. He suggests that it’s not just about driving down the carbon dioxide (CO2) output of the vehicle - it’s also about creating a car that is safe, cheap to run and has enough space for all the family.
There were several other awards dished out as part of the ceremony. The British-built MINI Cooper S for example, earned the title ‘greenest sports car’ while the BMW 318d was the best green executive car.
At contrasting ends of the market, the Fiat 500 Stop&Start picked up the award for the best green supermini, while the Audi A8 2.8 V6 was the best green luxury car. The Citroen Grand 4 Picasso meanwhile took the title of the Best Green MPV for the second year running.
There was praise too for some innovations still to come to the UK market. Vauxhall’s Ampera, which goes on sale in 2012, picked up the technical award; while Tesla scooped the Editor’s Award for the pioneering Roadster.
