Not-so-shocking admission: Zap kills Xebra, slows development of Alias

Our sleuthing colleagues over at The Truth About Cars have dissected electric car maker Zap’s latest 10-Q filing, and they unearthed the following little tidbit: “The decrease of $1.5 million (in revenue) is primarily due to the phase out of our three wheeled Xebra vehicle with reduced selling prices.”

We can’t say that we’re particularly shocked that Zap has found it difficult to continue moving its little three-wheeled Xebra contraption, especially with discretionary spending money in such short supply these days and reasonably-priced hybrids flooding the used car market. Perhaps even more damning for Zap, though, is the admission that it is doing “less work on the development of the Alias prototype vehicle.”

Whatever the future has in store for Zap in 2010 and beyond, one thing is for sure: there will be no shortage of press releases to let us all know what’s (supposedly) going on behind closed doors.

Capstone to unveil range extended super car

The Chevrolet Volt isn't the only range extended car on its way – now Capstone Turbine Corporation will introduce its own prototype at the LA Auto Show.

Its range extended electric supercar, known as the CMT-380, is currently in the design and test phase, and is being developed in partnership with Electronic Arts Chief Creative Director Richard Hilleman. It includes a lithium polymer battery pack that supports an electric range up to 80 miles and when the batteries reach a state of discharge, the Capstone C30 microturbine comes into effect, firing up and recharging the batteries to extend the driving range up to 500 miles.

The prototype is based on a Factory Five Racing GTM body and can accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds. It has a top speed of 150mph.

Capstone's 30kW microturbines have previously been installed in hybrid electric buses, as well as in trolleys and transit shuttles, Thanks to a patented combustion system, exhaust emissions are kept extremely low and there is no need for expensive exhaust after treatment for the vehicle to adhere to the strict California Air Resources Board and EPA 2010 requirements.

A C30 liquid fuelled microturbine has already been integrated into a Ford S-MAX people carrier in the UK and now this hybrid demonstration vehicle is intended to showcase the technology and demonstrate value proposition of microturbines as well as electric vehicle range extenders.

Less street lighting is best report finds

Street lighting is not only bad for the environment but it also encourages crime and is often ineffective at reducing road accidents, the Royal Commission of Environmental Pollution (RCEP) has claimed.

On the publication of its new report 'Artifical Light in the Environment', the commission said that there was an 'urgent need' for Government to recognise that artificial light is a harmful pollutant when used inefficiently.

The report studied the effect of 'light pollution' as it is know, which causes the loss view of the night sky and stars to find how it impacts on people as well as on nature and ecosystems. Artificial lighting is not just an energy drain, costing councils millions in electricity to operate each year and contributing to the UK's carbon footprint but the light itself is know to play havoc with plants and animals and can even be damaging to human health. The orange glow often seen at night in urban areas has already been blamed for altering the behavioural patterns of animals and for causing stress in humans.

Although street lighting is useful to create a sense of security and enable mobility during night time according to the report, artificial light can also adversely encourage crime rather than discourage it. Badly designed and located street lighting can cause glare leading to the creation of dark shadows which can help rather than hinder criminal activity.

Meanwhile street lighting is effective at reducing road accidents in areas where cars and pedestrians meet such as residential roads but is ineffective on motorways.

Sir John Lawton, Chair of the Commission, said: "We heard evidence to suggest that more light isn't always better in terms of reducing crime or the incidence of road traffic accidents.

"There are around 7½ million road lights in the UK. Over 2 million are nearly 30 years old and will therefore need to be replaced in the next couple of years. This presents a real opportunity for local authorities to think about minimising the negative impacts of stray light, for the benefit of both nature and the general public."

The Commission also raised concerns about a move towards replacing existing yellow/orange road lighting, which does not affect many organisms, with more modern broader wavelength lighting, which is likely to be detected by a greater number and variety of organisms, could lead to significant impacts on natural systems.

The RCEP is calling on local authorities to consider alternatives to simply providing more light, such as using new lighting technologies coming on-stream, and dimming or turning off lights in quieter areas where they are not needed.

Zero-emission sowing: farming goes better than carbon neutral in OZ [w/VIDEO]

Click above to watch the video after the break

Let’s see an i-MiEV do this.

Michael Inwood, a farmer in New South Wales, Australia, has converted a Mitsubishi truck to plant crops using nothing but electric power. It gets better. The car is charged using renewable energy (wind and sun) and the farming method he uses, called Pasture Cropping and No Kill Cropping, doesn’t use fertilizers or chemicals. It also returns biomass to the earth, sequestering the carbon trapped within, and is therefore better than carbon neutral. The truck uses 45 lead acid batteries (we think) to generate 200 hp, 150 kW, and 100 nm of torque. Plenty to pull the farm equipment. The truck cost $40,000 AUS to convert, but Inwood thinks that it makes sense for his family wool and grain farm. After all, he says that, “You could arguably say this is the most environmentally friendly vehicle in the world.”

Watch a video on the project here and another one after the jump. Thanks to Michael I. for the tip!

Mazda to take centre stage in electric vehicle project

Not to be outdone by its Japanese rivals, Mazda will lead the way in a new project aimed at testing a low carbon transport system that uses clean energy.

The company will provide three Mazda Demios (Mazda2s) for conversion to electric vehicles as part of the project in collaboration with Itochu Corporation and other companies in conjunction with Tsukuba City for the Tsukuba Environmental Style Test Project that is scheduled to begin in March, 2010. The aim of the project is to assess a low carbon energy network composed of electric vehicles, fixed battery stations, solar panels, a car sharing service and rapid chargers.

Mazda has adopted a policy aimed at improving its internal combustion engines and then combine them with electric devices. This includes the i-stop idling stop system, regenerative braking and hybrid systems. Now it aims to strengthen the base of future research and development activities.

Its main initiatives will include testing the viability of reusing electric vehicle batteries in fixed battery stations; testing a model to optimally use renewable energy in electric vehicles; and testing the viability of a new electric vehicle car sharing system to accelerate a low-carbon transport society.

The additional organisations that will play a role in the project include the Itochu Corporation as the project leader; Family Mart, which will provide sites at convenience stores; Itochu Enex, which will provide sites at service stations; Kyuki which will provide rapid charges; Think and Tokyo R&D, which will both provide electric vehicles; and EnerDel Inc US, which will supply vehicle batteries and fixed batteries.

Also contributing will be Seiko Electric for fixed battery system integration; Itochu Techno-Solutions for ICT technology and a data centre; Windcar Car with a sharing service; Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation and Nippon Car Solutions both for car sharing; and Ecosystem Japan with solar panel systems.

Speak No Evil: Latest Aptera newsletter stays mum about company turmoil

Aptera 2e final design rendering - Click above to enlarge

Aptera Motors has been in the news recently because there’s been a lot of trouble behind the scenes, with company founder Steve Fambro being let go and the vehicle being pushed back to 2010. The latest company email newsletter is out and it mentions three items:

  1. An Aptera 2e that was on display at the Reliant Football Stadium in Houston, Texas for the Texan/Titans game five days ago.
  2. That the company is resubmitting its application to the DOE, now that three-wheelers can be considered.
  3. Some information on “Aptera’s Beach Body” and the evolution of the 2-series composite body.

Can you see what’s missing? The official website, too, doesn’t mention the trouble. We can understand that the company doesn’t want to spend all of its communication bandwidth on problems it is having, but to not acknowledge them in any way gives off a bad feeling. Combine this with what we’ve heard (but haven’t proved) about the Aptera website’s RSS news feed being recoded to reduce the number of stories that show up about the troubles, and it’s not exactly looking transparent over at there. Here’s hoping for a bit more sunlight. Thanks to Richard H. for the tip!

Volkswagen to invest in Brazil

Its spiritual home may be in Germany, but after enjoying significant growth in South America, Volkswagen will invest €2.3billion in new products and manufacturing capacity expansion in Brazil between 2009 and 2014.

Having set a target to sell one million vehicles a year in the country within five years, Volkswagen will spend big to support the development of new products and the expansion capacity of Anchieta Taubate and its engine plant in San Carlos.

Currently, Volkswagen do Brazil has a daily production capacity of 3,000 vehicles and is already the country's largest car manufacturer. Indeed Volkswagen also has the largest dealer network in the Brazilian automotive industry with 600 dealers located across the country. Deliveries to customers have risen by 70 per cent since 2005 to 585,000 units in 2008 with local production expected to exceed 800,000 vehicles this year.

During this year and next year, Volkswagen will launch 26 product innovations in the country having already rejuvenated its product range over the last two years with the introduction of the new Gol, Saveiro, Voyage and Fox. The new Cross Fox will debut at the end of November, with the Passat CC, Tiguan and Eos available as imports.

Brazil is widely viewed as a market with huge growth potential – statistics indicate that there is currently only one vehicle per seven inhabitants of the country, compared to Germany where there is one vehicle for every two inhabitants. Vehicle density is expected to grow rapidly in Brazil to one vehicle per four inhabitants over the next five years.

Report: Revived Toyota MR2 hybrid could challenge Honda CR-Z

Honda may not have the hybrid sports coupe market to itself for long if a report out of Japan has any merit. One of Japan’s top car magazines, Best Car, is reporting that Toyota is planning to bring forth a hybrid sports car in the near future as a direct challenger to the new Honda. Unlike the front wheel drive Honda, the renderings produced by the magazine indicate that the sporting hybrid would be mid-engined like the now discontinued MR2.

Such a layout would would imply the likelihood of a significantly higher performance level than what we expect from the CR-Z, although Honda has yet to say just what to expect from its coupe. A hybrid sportster like this would might also be a good first non-plug application for new lithium ion batteries. If such a car does become a reality from Toyota, it would certainly be in line with Akio Toyoda’s stated intent of getting more passion into his namesake brand. It would also make an interesting counterpoint to the upcoming FT-86 being developed with Subaru. Who said hybrids had to be boring?

Elektromotive heads to Belgium and Luxembourg

UK based Elektromotive is making headway in the electric vehicle recharging market after appointing ThePluginCompany to install networks of charging stations across Belgium and Luxembourg.

Pilot schemes will begin almost straightaway, with 20 Elektrobay units to be installed in the country by the end of the year with further rollouts planned in 2010.

The first project starts in Brussels at the headquarters of LeasePlan, the world's largest vehicle management and leasing provider. Installations at other LeasePlan locations will follow next year, supporting the company's commitment to increasing the availability of both low and zero emission vehicles within its European fleet.

In addition, Elektromotive and The PluginCompany will work together to educate businesses and legislators in Belgium and Luxembourg about the benefits of zero emission motoring as well as the need for compatible recharging infrastructures. They will then detail the steps that can be taken to quickly implement the Elektrobay networks ahead of the arrival of new electric and plug-in hybrids which are scheduled to be launched over the next three years.

The first Elektrobay was introduced in Westminster, London, in 2006 and by December 2009 there will be more than 120 across the capital with a further 90 charging stations installed in cities and shopping centres around the UK. Elektromotive has also exported its technology to the Netherlands, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Germany and Sweden.

New regulations for the production of batteries, both nickel-hydrogen and lithium-ion, have been submitted to China’s State Council, according to Wang Shulin, a National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)’s expert. China’s current production figures for batteries are expected to exceed 140,000 kWh (nickel) and 900,000 kWh (lithium) by the end of this year. These figures are expected to reach 360,000 kWh and 4 million kWh, respectively, for 2010. Bearing in mind that an average EV might use a 30 kWh battery (see some examples here), up to 150,000 EVs could be powered by these new packs. Still, the NDRC predicts there will be 100,000 electric cars by 2012 and 4 million in 2020.

Something to be thankful for: getting off of gas might reduce road rage

Turns out, getting off of gasoline might save more than parts of the environment. According to a study published in BMC Physiology, rats exposed to unleaded gasoline fumes for 30 minutes a day for six weeks “exhibited an increase in lipid peroxidation and a decrease in AChE and superoxide dismutase activities.” What does that mean? The rats got mad and had “a higher tendency towards aggressive behaviour as a consequence to gasoline inhalation.” Basically, gasoline vapors can piss us off.

The study was conducted by Amal Kinawy of Cairo University, who says that the results might be applicable to humans help cause road rage. It’ll take a long time to eliminate all gas-powered vehicles from the road, but doesn’t the fight between hydrogen and pure electric seem slightly less important considering the benefits of reducing gasoline usage in general?

Saab sale falls through

Saab sale falls through

The potential sale of General Motors' Saab brand has fallen through after Koenigsegg Group AB terminated its agreement to purchase the company.

GM and Koenigsegg had initially signed a stock purchase agreement regarding the sale of 100 per cent of the shares of Saab Automobile AB in August. Conditions to the sale included funding commitments with Swedish Government support and guarantees; as well as transitional assistance from GM. In September, Koenigsegg then signed a memorandum of understanding with Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Co Ltd in an effort to explore growth opportunities in the Chinese market for Saab Automobile and BIAC.

Now however, the sale has fallen through with the news confirmed by GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson who said he was "very disappointed". He commented that many people had worked tirelessly to create a substantial plan for the future of Saab and that the company would now take several days to assess the situation and evaluate what the next step should be.

The decision comes just a month after General Motors decided not to sell the Opel/Vauxhall brand – it is currently working on the reorganisation and financing of the brand.

New Toyota hybrid gets off to a flying start

Will Toyota ever put a foot wrong in the hybrid vehicle category?

Having already established itself as the market leader with the iconic Toyota Prius, the Japanese company is now enjoying further sales success with its latest model – the Sai hybrid-only luxury compact saloon car.

Just one month after its introduction, the vehicle has received around 14,000 orders with a monthly sales target for Japan now set at 3,000 units.

The Sai is based on the platform used for the Lexus HS250h and will go on sale in Japan from December 7. It includes a 2.4litre Atkinson four cylinder engine with variable valve timing with intelligence, as well as a 105kW motor and reduction gear. As the intake valve closure is delayed, the engine is capable of a high expansion ratio at low pressure, which in turn raises heat efficiency.

The Toyota Sai Hybrid has fuel efficiency of 54mpg on the 10-15 cycle, and under the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism test cycle its fuel efficiency is rated at 46.6mpg.

REPORT: Tesla IPO could be more a financing event than a way to cash out

Tesla Roadster - Click above for high-res image gallery

We recently asked if the Tesla IPO is for you, and the results of that poll are about even. Just over half of you (51.4 percent as of this writing) think that investing in the electric car start-up is a good idea. Over at Businessweek, our friend Josie Garthwaite looks at how a Tesla IPO fits into the venture capital and green scenes. If it happens, it’ll be the first automaker to go public since Ford did so a half-century ago, and it comes at an interesting time in the markets. The short version is that “public offerings now serve more as “financing events” for alternative energy and other cleantech startups, rather than as a way for investors and founders to cash in on equity.” After more than $200 million in financing and $465 million in DOE low-interest loans, raising money from an IPO is a logical step.

To compare, A123’s recent IPO had a great opening but then came back down. Garthwaite says that A123’s venture capital investors averaged a four-fold return on their money, which isn’t at all bad in today’s economy, but doesn’t come close to the returns of the dot com era (isn’t this sort of a good thing, given “irrational exuberance” and all that?).

As for what the Tesla shares might be worth or how many there are, read this, and do some research before investing anything.

Consumer Federation of America pushing CAFE to climb to 45 mpg by 2020

America’s CAFE standards will climb to 35.5 mpg (42 mpg for cars, 26 mpg for light trucks) by 2016, thanks to the Obama Administration declaring not long after taking power how conflicting national and state (well, California) standards would be turned into one set or rules. But what comes after 2016? The Consumer Federation of America (CFA) says that 45 mpg is the new black and is pushing Obama to look long-term. CFA also believes that the technology to reach a 45 mpg average is available and just needs to be put to use. CFA’s director of research, Mark Cooper, said in a statement that:

There is no question that the EPA should take the lead in developing the next generation of standards for the sake of the consumer and the industry. NHTSA not only has statutory limits that prevent long-term planning, but they have a history of close alignment with the domestic car companies, whose current financial woes stem from a lack of fuel efficient vehicles. If they were not in such bad shape, NHTSA could have set the 2016 standard at more than 38 mpg.

Read the CFA’s statement here (PDF). The Administration will decide on it’s final rules in April, and we can expect a lot more voices to weigh in before then.

Mazda i-Stop wins another award, 2009 Japan Eco-Products

Mazda has just garnered another award for its new i-stop system that debuted this year on the Axela (3) and Bianti MPV. This is Mazda’s take on an automatic start/stop system to eliminate idling but with a novel new twist. Rather than just use a more robust starter and battery to crank up the engine every time you pull away from a stop, it takes advantage of the direct injection. The engine is stopped in a specific position each time (one of the pistons just below top dead center on the power stroke) and fuel is sprayed in directly and ignited. The expansion of the burning gas gets the piston moving and fires the engine with less strain on the starter.

Mazda has been recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism with one of its Eco-Product awards for 2009. Like other start stop systems, i-stop can provide up to a 10 percent reduction in consumption in urban driving thanks to the idle reduction.

European release date of Chevrolet Spark revealed

European release date of Chevrolet Spark revealed

The Chevrolet Volt may grab most of the headlines, but General Motors has other exciting products ready to enter dealerships in 2010.

From the first quarter of the new-year, GM Europe will launch the Chevrolet Spark, an all-new mini-car. As the fastest growing segment of the market globally, the mini-car segment represents almost 10 per cent of the total European passenger car market – up from 6.5 per cent in 2008 and less than five per cent in 2005.

So what does the Spark have to offer?

The vehicle will have a choice of two petrol engines – displacements of 1.0 and 1.2litres. They use a cast-iron block and alloy head, as well as a double overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder. They also feature multi-port fuel injection and are both Euro V emissions compliant.

Both engines include advanced features such as port deactivation which improves exhaust gas recirculation and leads to optimal fuel efficiency and idle stability. It also helps ensure low maintenance and running costs with the Spark consuming as little as 1.5litres of fuel per 100km and producing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at a meagre 119g/km.

The smaller of the units can power the car from 0-62mph in 15.5 seconds, with a top speed of 96mph. The 1.0lite Chevrolet Spark has a fuel consumption rating of 46mpg and it produces 93Nm of torque at 4,800rpm. The larger unit, meanwhile, achieves 111Nm at 4,800rpm and accelerates from 0-62mph in 12.1seconds. It can reach a top speed of 102mph and its fuel consumption remains the same as the 1.0litre version.

In addition, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) versions of both engines will be rolled out in select European markets beginning with Italy in February and followed in France, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Poland and a handful of additional countries.
