Police to train in eco-driving techniques

The police are set to be the latest 'green' driving converts.

An updated police driver training manual has been launched by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland (ACPOS) to include advice on 'eco-driving' techniques such as avoiding harsh braking and acceleration.

The manual provides police force driving schools with a framework which green driving techniques now form a part of. The inclusion of the eco-driving tips in the manual is designed to help police forces meet social responsibilities and to reduce fleet running costs.

Ian Shannon, Assistant Chief Constable North Wales Police and ACPO lead for driver Training, said:"Police officers spend a lot of time behind the wheel of a car, not just in responding to emergencies, but also in travelling from one place to another and enforcing road laws.

"The training modules include pre-driving checks, judging speed and vehicle control, stress and attitude, responding to emergencies [and] anticipating driving situations."
