REPORT: GM's rumored 53 mpg Prius fighter canceled

You can bet that automakers the world over are watching intently as the redesigned Honda Insight fails to mount a serious threat to Toyota’s global hybrid dominance in the U.S. market. That would include General Motors, which was rumored to have a dedicated-hybrid Prius fighter in the works for its bread-and-butter Chevrolet brand.

While Toyota’s competitors - including, of course, General Motors - would surely love to cut into the market currently owned by the Prius, perhaps a slightly different tack is in order. According to a report from Bloomberg, product planners at America’s largest automaker are diverting their attention away from a rumored dedicated hybrid sedan from Chevrolet that would compete directly with the Prius and back on other hopeful game-changing vehicles like the 2011 Chevy Volt, ultimately choosing to cancel plans for the rumored 53 mpg hybrid last November.
