The Ford Focus is one of the most popular cars in the world and now its successful formula will be taken to the next level by combining new technology with clever details to create the most fuel efficient version of the model to date.
The next generation Ford Focus ECOnetic was revealed at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in September and will be made available with optional Ford Auto Start-Stop. It also includes regenerative charging, low tension front end accessory drive and it is powered by a 1.6litre Duratorq TDCi engine that has a standard diesel particulate filter. All of these features combine so that the vehicle can now target carbon dioxide (CO2) emission levels at a meagre 99g/km with a combined fuel economy of 74.2mpg.
Let's take a look at each of the new technologies that will be incorporated into the vehicle:
- Ford Auto Start-Stop System: This automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is idle and restarts the engine when the driver wants to move off, saving fuel. This can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to five per cent in mixed driving conditions and up to 10 per cent in an urban environment.
- Smart Regenerative Charging: This increases the alternator output when the vehicle brakes or decelerates and converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electric energy without having to use additional fuel. The energy is then used to recharge the battery so that it can be used in electrical systems at a later stage.
- Low Tension Front End Accessory Driver (FEAD): A newly designed alternator bracket and belt pulley design help the tension of the front end accessory drive belt to be lowered without issues. With the belt at a lower tension, friction in the entire system is reduced which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
- Duratorq TDCi engine technology: This improved engine has been revised with new injectors, an exhaust system fitted with an oxygen sensor and a diesel particular filter.
- Ford Eco Mode: This provides software to help the driver become more focused on lowering fuel consumption. It monitors parameters relevant to optimise fuel consumption including gear shifting, anticipation, and speed.
The new Ford Focus ECOnetic range will be available from early 2010.
