Power boost for Smart Fortwo

The Smart Fortwo is renowned as one of the most economical vehicles around, but now it will get an injection of power too.

For the model year 2010, Daimler has given the Smart Fortwo CDI a 21 per cent boost in power as well as around 18 per cent more torque. The re-engineered diesel engine now has an output of 40kW - that’s 7kW more than its predecessor; while the three-cylinder engine delivers maximum torque of 130Nm - an increase of 18 per cent compared to the previous model.

The power increase has been realised due to modified pistons as well as an adjusted injection and charge pressure parameters. It has also been possible to lengthen the gear ratios of the third and fourth gears by 10 and 11 per cent respectively, and lower the shifting points in the automatic programme. This in turn cuts the rpm level in speed ranges that are used particularly frequently helping the car’s fuel consumption and noise level. Thanks to the power boost, the car can race from 0-100km/h in around 16.8 seconds.

The Smart Fortwo CDI is equipped with a closed diesel particular filter and emissions are below the EU5 standard at 88g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2). Perhaps most amazingly however, despite the improvements in power, there has been no reduction in fuel economy. Just as before, it consumes 3.4litres per 100 kilometres - 69mpg.
