Everybody may know those bright red vans - but not everyone will hear them coming in Japan, where the country’s postal service is scheduled to deploy 40 electric vehicles during this fiscal year.
The first units are scheduled to come into operation later this month after the Japan Post Service Company signed five-year lease agreements for 20 units apiece of the Subaru Plug-in Stella and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.
The electric vehicles will predominantly be in use through branches in Kanagawa Prefecture, where there is a recharging infrastructure in place.
According to reports, Japan Post Services is also in the process of testing custom-built electric vehicles for mail pick-up and is likely to test the plug-in version of the Toyota Prius later this year.
