So which company has reaped the benefits of the vehicle scrappage scheme the most here in the UK? Look no further than Korean car manufacturer Hyundai.
The company, which is a major employer in the Essex area, has taken more than 17,000 orders since the scheme started - that’s almost 300 a day. Its most popular vehicle under the scheme is the i10, which has taken one in 12 of all orders placed in the UK using the scheme. So popular is the vehicle that the company has been asking its staff to work around the clock to help get the cars to customers quickly.
The i20 super-mini meanwhile has secured close to 5,000 orders with buyers seemingly turning away from the significant price increases implemented by other manufacturers.
Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai’s managing director, believes that price is playing a big role in the vehicles’ success.
“In this sector of the market and in this economic climate, buyers are incredibly price conscious,” he said.
“Other car companies have piled on the pounds with punitive price increases, meaning that comparative mainstream models can cost 30 per cent more. That’s too big a difference to ignore, especially as the i20 has a better NCAP rating, a longer warranty and a generous level of equipment.”
The most popular cars to be traded in for the new Hyundai under the scheme are the Ford Fiesta (1,406) and the Nissan Micra (1,076).
