The USA and China aren’t the most likely of partners in the automotive industry, but US Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Chinese Minster of Science Wan Gang, as well as its Administrator of National Energy Administration Zhang Guo Bao, may have found some common ground.
Together they have announced plans to develop a US-China Clean Energy Research Centre with priorities including building energy efficiency, lower emitting coal technologies including carbon capture and storage, and of course - clean vehicles.
The centre is expected to facilitate research and development by a team of scientists and engineers from both countries. It will also serve as a clearing house to help researchers with the countries together pledging $15million to support its initial activities.
The plans will see headquarters located in each country at locations to be determined. It is hoped that initial operations will be launched by the end of the year.
It’s actually not the first time that the countries have collaborated on science and technology - it has been at the heart of their co-operation since 1979. It focuses on policy, research and development as well as innovation in all fields where there is a mutual interest. Several million dollars are dedicated each year through agency to agency agreements and the US Department of Energy currently manages 12 agreements with China under this framework.
