Monitor your carbon emissions daily with greener car insurance

Pay-as-you-drive vehicle insurer Coverbox is helping motorists monitor their carbon footprint and incentivising motorists to drive  in the most economical fashion, using tracking technology to monitor driving habits.

Policyholders can now monitor the level of their vehicle’s carbon tyreprint online thanks to GPS technology that relays emissions information direct to their home PC.

“Our GPS-based system allows car drivers to go online and monitor time, distance and cost of journeys, but also gives them a readout of carbon emissions directly from a vehicle’s onboard computer – the information gets no more accurate than that, and it is a very simple process to log on and review those emissions figures,” said Paul Stacy of Coverbox.

The innovative insurance company charges drivers less if they drive less and also offers cheaper cover for those drivers who avoid rush hour traffic. Not only is it greener for drivers to avoid the roads at the most congested times but from the insurer’s viewpoint, it is safer too, hence the lower premium.

“Drivers are able to monitor mileage costs based on time and distance, and are changing their driving habits accordingly – avoiding higher-charge rush hour driving, and combining several journeys into one. That works on costs grounds for the vehicle owner, but it also means that emissions can be monitored and cut by changing driving habits as well,” explains Stacy.

Coverbox pay-as-you-drive insurance allows drivers to take out comprehensive cover that is paid for by the mile, with the price per mile varying according to the time of the day or night: off-peak, peak or “super-peak” times.

Over-23s are charged according to rush hour (Mon to Fri 730am – 930am & 430pm to 600pm excluding public holidays) or off-peak use, but under-23s are also subject to a “super-peak” charging structure: Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1100pm to 500am, and public holidays 1100pm to 500am.

All Coverbox policyholders get free theft tracking – which would be at least £200 more on top of a traditional insurance policy – in addition they have a personal website which enables them to see precisely how many miles they are driving, and what the cost of those miles is.

The technology behind Coverbox – provided by Cobra, one of Europe’s leading automotive security companies, and based on proven equipment specified as original equipment by several major car makers – means customers will also have the additional peace of mind of theft tracking: in virtually all cases, Coverbox can track and locate the car if it is stolen.
