Mitsubishi to unveil two new concepts

Anyone who gets excited by new vehicle concepts won't be able to turn away from Mitsubishi at this year's Tokyo Motor Show.

The Japanese manufacturer will unveil two new concept cars at the event: the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid and the i-MiEV CARGO. There will also be 10 Mitsubishi current production vehicles on display that qualify for eco-car tax incentives in Japan.

So what do we know about the latest additions to the Mitsubishi line-up?

The Mitsubishi Concept PX has fuel economy in excess of 118mpg on the Japanese 10-15 cycle. Its front and rear wheels are powered by permanent magnet synchronous motors with a combined maximum output of 60kW and 200Nm of torque and the vehicle is fitted with an 85kW, 125Nm 1.6l DOHC MIVEC petrol engine that can power the front wheels, as well as a 70kW generator.

The vehicle also uses the MiEV Operating System that selects the optimum drive mode through integrated control of the electric vehicle components and the petrol engine. It also controls optimum electrical charge and output in response to the remaining battery energy thanks to constant monitoring of the drive battery.

There are plenty of other exciting innovations within the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV including a driving safety support system in which an on-board receiver picks up signals transmitted by roadside optical beacons and urges the driver to take extra care when other vehicles or pedestrians have been detected. The system is currently being promoted by the Japanese National Police Agency.

Less is known about the Mitsubishi i-MiEV CARGO but it is said to add a generous amount of rear free space to the i-MiEV to extend its range of uses. The rear space features space-efficient cubic dimensions that allow the users to adapt it for whatever they choose.
