Peugeot got into trouble this week over an advert which implied that the 308 model could give car buyers a record 126 miles to the gallon.
The national press advert, which featured the Guinness World Record rather than the official test data, was found to be in violation of rules governing advertisements by watchdog, Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The Guinness World Record included in the ad, was set by the famous 'fuel fugitives' John and Helen Taylor, known for their fuel efficiency runs, who achieved 126 miles to the gallon in a Peugeot 308 HDi, while travelling 3,700miles around the UK.
Peugeot put the official fuel consumption figures in the small print of the advert, however ASA ruled that it was insufficient and that the 'lighthearted' layout of the ad did not make 'sufficiently clear' that the 126 mpg figure related to a world record and rather than those achievable under normal driving conditions.
