Vauxhall reduces emissions of Insignia

Sporty models and green cars aren’t usually a good match, but that may change with Vauxhall giving the Insignia Sports Tourer a revamp.

After the success of the Insignia ecoFLEX hatchback and saloon versions, the Insignia Sports Tourer has been given its own ecoFLEX version that offers a significant reduction in running costs as well as the obvious benefits to the environment.

It takes the model into the sub-140g/km emission level with a carbon dioxide (CO2) figure of 139g/km. This allows the car to drop four tax bands to 18 per cent for company car drivers compared with the regular Sports Tourer. There is also a 12.3 per cent improvement in combined fuel consumption at 53.7mpg compared to 47.1mpg for the regular model.

Despite the environmental improvements, there is no sacrifice on performance. It retains the 160hp 2.0litre CDTi diesel that is seen elsewhere in the range and achieves a top speed of 134mph while racing from 0-60mph in a mere 9.3 seconds.

Much of the improved efficiency is achieved through a number of aerodynamic changes. For example, the Insignia Sports Tourer ecoFLEX features front air inlets and two underbody spoilers that direct air over the rear axle reducing drag and lift. There is also an upper front grille that has been closed while the ride height is reduced.

The vehicle is priced at £21,515 for the Exclusiv model up to £27,750 for the Elite Nav.
