The year of 2011 promises to be one of the most exciting in the history of motoring as electric vehicle services provider Better Place and car manufacturer Renault plan to begin production of tens of thousands of electric vehicles.
Initial sales will begin in December 2011 in Denmark and Israel with the car maker developing three electric models: a saloon car, a compact car and a panel van.
According to Jens Mobery, the chief executive of Better Place Denmark, production will reach tens of thousands per year for the Danish market from 2011 with electric drivers signing up for a monthly subscription with Better Place to access its batteries similar to signing up for a mobile phone contract.
No details were released about how much a subscription will cost, but the battery is expected to be priced at around $11,760 to manufacture - by comparison the Tesla Roadster will have a retail price of around $30,000. It is expected however, that as production expands the cost of the battery will decrease.
Drivers will be able to recharge the batteries at home or switch batteries at a swap station, which will take less time than filling a petrol tank. In Denmark there will be around 100 battery swap stations initially with plans for further expansion. The capital city of Copenhagen alone is working on installing up to 60 by the time of the UN climate change summit in December.
Better Place is said to be in discussions with several other European countries for further expansion.
