Following Toyota’s admission this morning that the third-gen Prius model has had brake problems, the U.S. Transportation Department has opened a probe into the situation. The formal investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will look at whether the 2010 Prius models actually have temporary braking problems on uneven surfaces as has been reported. Apparently, NHTSA has received 124 consumer complaints about the Prius’ brakes (again, this does not apply to the 2004-2009 models and the new Prius has not been recalled - yet), and some of those problems resulted ins crashes (four times) and minor injuries (twice). Toyota’s response? “Toyota will cooperate fully with NHTSA’s investigation,” spokeswoman Cindy Knight told the Automotive News in an e-mail.
